Dojo Rules & Etiquette

  1. Bow on & off the training area. Bow to training partner/instructor. This is a sign of respect.
  2. Be on time for class. We recognize that there are circumstances that will come up that will impact this. Please wait at mat edge for the Sensei to allow you to join the class (warm up on your on in the back if you have missed the opening class time).
  3. KUMITE: NO ONE under the rank of Shodan (black belt) spars (kumite) with another student unless they have asked the Sensei for permission. This includes grappling. The Sensei will remain on the floor to observe to ensure all is under control.
    1. This is a safety issue
    2. White belts NEVER spar one another (unless a Sensei is “running the ring”)
    3. Kumite is NOT MMA (mixed martial arts)
    4. Hand pads & mouth pieces are required. Shin/instep pads & groin protection for males is highly recommended. (we reserve the right to disallow certain types of pads for safety reasons so check in advance before making purchase)
  4. Keep your uniform (gi) clean!!! For some this means wash it after every training session!
    1. Leave your damp uniform out of your bag to air dry; a damp gi stuffed into a gym bag is guaranteed to smell quite badly when pulled out!
    2. Other hygiene – keep nails (fingers & toes) trimmed
    3. Wash/wipe down your pads occasionally
  5. Inform the Sensei & training partners of injuries; things you are not able to do.
    1. Cover all cuts (a bandaid alone will come off with sweat) when training.
  6. Bring water to drink (especially in hot months); keep a roll of athletic tape in your bag should you need some.
  7. Use a quiet voice for all conversations so as not to distract the class.
    1. All conversation IN CLASS by other than the Sensei should be brief & targeted to explaining or correcting your training partner.
  8. Black belts are addressed as Sensei while in the training facility. You may include the last name to differentiate which Sensei you are addressing.
